The Background
Connect Cards is a deck of playing cards designed with questions on them to encourage discussion between players. They can be used separately to the Community Table, but were initially designed to work in collaboration with Community Table to provide a natural way for people to get to know each other and break down any initial awkwardness. Research found that elderly people are increasingly isolated and therefore might find it intimidating talking to a new person. Connect Cards was designed to help solve that problem by playing simple card games such as snap and incorporating asking questions throughout the game. They can also just be used as playing cards or just be used as question cards.
The questions were written to touch upon memories and experiences from the past, present and future, whilst encouraging the participants to practise gratification and look after their wellbeing. The cards include questions such as what they are thankful for and what brings them joy. It also highlights issues of isolation and mental health concerns through more serious questions.
